Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Medical College, Mirpur is one of the first two public sector medical colleges in Azad State of Jammu and Kashmir. The institution is located in an improvised built campus in Mirpur; a city in the South of the State, situated on the bank of Mangla Dam. The College is recognized by PMDC for 100 admissions. First year MBBS classes started on 31st January 2012.

College bears a long history of struggle for its creation. Late Premier ZA Bhutto first announced the opening of Medical College at Mirpur in 1976; however it could not be materialized. On the consistent efforts of Ch. Abdul Majeed (now Prime Minster of AJ&K.) Shaheed Bibi Benazir Bhutto announced the opening of Medical College at Mirpur in a public gathering at Bradford before her last departure for Pakistan.

We can take pride in fact that His Excellency, Mr. Asif Ali Zardari, President Islamic Republic of Pakistan laid the foundation stone of “Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Medical College in Mirpur Azad Jammu Kashmir” on 5th May 2010.

The objective of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Medical College is to bring brilliance in medical education and service delivery along the lines of the international norms. To fulfill this mission we have formulated an advanced MBBS curriculum as per directions of PM&DC, which will have supplementary facets like Integrated Education, Problem Based Learning and Skill Labs teachings. The institution provides rigorous educational programs for undergraduate, MBBS at present while the Government is planning to launch Dental, Nursing ,Paramedics, Pharmaceutical and Postgraduate studies leading to excellence in their respective specialties. The infrastructure is available for college academic activities, hostels for male and female students with sufficient communal services for the faculty as well as students. A string core of curricular and co-curricular activities is the basis on which undergraduates develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes essential to become good and ethical doctors. In addition, College keeps special emphasis on Faculty Development through Continuous Medical Education like regular weekly Clinicopathological meetings, monthly Guest Lectures, Fortnightly Workshops, Quarterly Seminars, and Annual Conferences etc. The first Annual Scientific Conference of the institution is scheduled on 8,9 & 10th March 2013. The learning resource centre having network throughout the college campus is up-to-date with modern Library facility with availability of large number of latest books and journals.

Mirpur is a city of overseas expatriates especially residing in UK. MBBS MC is striving to strengthen the endeavors of diverse medical professionals from UK who have been facing difficulty in finding forums back in their homeland. The MBBS MC is now the opportunity where Pakistani & Kashmiri overseas medical professionals from UK & other countries may contribute regularly to pay back to their soil by imparting their skill to the new generations.
