Kargil War Memorial

War Memorials are established to commemorate great victories. Remembering the dead was secondary concern. Kargil War has been close to every patriot. Every 26th of July, nation gathers to pay homage to martyrs here at the Kargil War Memorial in remembrance of a saga of unparalleled courage, valour and sacrifice made by Indian soldiers.

War Memorial has been designed out of ‘Chitter Stone’ with the names of the martyrs inscribed on the rear wall. The annual celebration is called ‘OP VIJAY DIWAS’ to commemorate the Indian Victory. Kargil War Memorial, Drass has become a landmark and a major tourist attraction being visited by thousands of people from across the country who come to pay their obeisance to all those fallen on path of duty and to relive the saga of bravery and courage.

The Memorial has the WORLDS ‘HIGHEST-LARGEST-HEAVIEST' tricolour and an Eternal Flame to immortalises the Martyrs. "Veer Bhumi" containing symbolic cemeteries of the martyrs and an original Mig-21 used in the operations are the latest addition to the 'Holy Ground'. Op Vijay Gallery at the Memorial contains complete information on Indian Operations in the War along with captured weapons, shells and I-Cards of Pakistani soldiers. The Gallery also exhibits profile of Gallantry Award winners and ‘SHAHID KALASH’ which symbolically contains mortal remains of martyrs. A Movie on Kargil War is also played on arrival of visitors.
