The Journey of Akhuwat
Akhuwat is dedicated to improving the lives of the marginalized, abandoned and disregarded of the society. As a registered and non-governmental organization Akhuwat provides these communities with interest-free loans (Qarz-e-Hasan) for small businesses, so that they may acquire livelihood and the skills they need to reach their full potential, and march towards empowerment and self-sufficiency.
Akhuwat derives inspiration from the Islamic spirit of muakhaat or brotherhood. As first displayed by the citizens of Madina at the dawn of islam, when they shared their wealth with the muhajirins of Mecca. Akhuwats philosophy is based on the principals of Qarza-e-Hasan, helping someone in need with interest free loans, which is favored over charity.
Akhuwat’s total disbursement has now increased to 16 billion in just over 14 years. Akhuwats greatest success is that it has been instrumental in helping more than 850,000 families move from being dependent on others to being self sufficient.
