Salik Public School and Degree College Shagram Chitral

Some years ago, Mohammad Salahuddin Salik returned from England after doing his second Masters from The University of Reading. On reaching his home town Chitral, he was deeply depressed by the education system over there.

Chitral is a city towards the extreme north of Pakistan. It is walled on all sides by different mountain ranges. it is the gateway between the CARS and Pakistan. Due to Chitral's harsh climate, it is struck off from all road contact from Pakistan during the winters. It is a 14 hour minimum drive from the capital, Islamabad. Until 3 decades ago Chitral remained highly influenced by monarchy and even today their off springs are regarded as princes. In this Intro when i refer to his hometown, I actually mean his village which is another 5 hour drive from Chitral.

Salahuddin remained inspired by the British Education System as during his stay there he had visited a lot of British schools including the prestigious Eton College. At that time he decided to take a step. So, finally in the year 1994 he for the first time set up a Public School Chain in Chitral. His First three branches were in Shahgram, Khot and Shoghor. Salahuddin at that time used his links abroad and contacted several British teachers. They came all the way from England to the edge of the Hindukush to teach in these schools.

Until 2008 the fee structure of the schools remained so low that Salahuddin had to pay from his pocket. All the building expenses and Land were also donated by Mohammad Salahuddin himself. All orphans were exempted of fee and one of every two siblings used to study free.

These schools produced students who got into KMC, LUMS, GIKI, Pakistan Air force and many other leading institutions of Pakistan.

These schools were situated in areas where the winters were 7-8 months long, where u can see glaciers in the mid of May. These people had talent but there was nothing to materialize it until Salahuddin put that stone into place.

Unfortunately on 19th May 2009, Salahuddin breathed his last due to a fatal heart attack. The Schools are now operated by his widow, Kaniz Fatima and his children.

Even after such an incident, his wife and his family kept strong and even today the candle of education burns bright, even brighter( the school has been upgraded to College level) for a kid born on the outskirts of the nation
